Why love may find you later in life

Why it's not a time of desperation, but can be a time of inner alignment

Sometimes paths don’t turn out as we might have imagined them. Some paths have their twists. Some paths aren’t the way we imagined them. Sometimes life makes us question what happened. That can often spark disappointment, as there are feelings of being left out or disappointed.

Especially with a sensitive topic such as love, there can be even more emotions. What went wrong? Why hasn’t it been different? Additionally, we may see others who have achieved certain milestones. But often, that’s just one side. We see their achievements. We don’t really see what they went through or the struggles they go through. And suddenly we feel like we're behind or too late.

So what can we do if love comes later in life?

First of all, practice patience. Being disappointed that it hasn’t happened yet or whether it will ever happen won’t necessarily move you forward. If anything, it can cause you even more doubt or even a headache.

Build a life on your own.

The more you wait until love finds you, the more you may be focused on another person. It’s often the inner void we try to fill, thinking we need our other half to complete us. But that’s quite a one-sided way of looking at things.

Maybe that’s sometimes exactly why love finds us later. We may choose to focus on ourselves. We may move through patterns, fears, and experiences that shape us in a certain way.

We may complain about certain things, but fair to say, those experiences can help us see what holds us back and what we truly want. If you experienced something you don’t like, at least now you know. If a past relationship ended badly, at least you can look at what triggered it. It may help you choose differently next time.

It’s not always a coincidence. That doesn’t mean we should fall into self-blame either, but rather engage in honest self-reflection. If we don’t look at our patterns, we may risk repeating them in the future. And maybe the other person you’re one day going to be with is going through a similar process.

Imagine they were also becoming prepared for a harmonious relationship. But that doesn’t happen by chance either. We first may wish to become the version of ourselves that can be the partner in the relationship we long for deep down.

Longing often isn’t enough

Often, people feel a deep longing for a partnership. That can hint at what you want, but longing alone isn’t always enough. Let’s say you long for a harmonious relationship, but you don’t feel harmony within yourself and your day is filled with stress. There may not even be space for a partner to land or at least, it may feel even harder to find someone suitable.

The relationship we dream of may require us to prepare ourselves to live it. Because that becomes an adavantage. The older you get, the more you know what you want.  However, it can sometimes also be an old image in our head keeping us stuck and 'waiting'.

Why we may be stuck in Hollywood thinking

We may long for the ideal romance. If you watch a Hollywood film with a romantic couple, we may somehow start to assume that everything just comes together. We may romantize an ideal love. But every relationship usually comes with certain challenges or working towards something. Be it simply accepting someone else’s flaws. And that’s the next one that can be in the way of finding love.

We may long for a perfect, Hollywood-crafted love story pictured for us, only to realize that we’ll still be faced with the other person’s flaws, as well as our own. And maybe that sometimes holds us back from love.

Because we imagine an idealized image of how our love story should unfold. But every love story is different.

Some start with a boom, others start unexpectedly. Some start with a friendship. Others start with an instant spark.

But not all. That image alone can make us doubt whether we can find it or we may even reject potential partners as we may have unconsciously created the 'wrong' idealized image in our minds.

Why an instant spark isn’t always a sign that someone is the one

Sometimes we may reject love unconsciously or turn down people for the wrong reasons. Sometimes people look for an instant spark. But sometimes it’s not an instant spark.

Yes, some relationships start with a high intensity. But it can also come with uncertainty and volatility. But what if that's what the butterflies are really about? What if the nervous system was reacting to that uncertainty that we may classify as butterflies. Some people like the uncertainty. They like the butterflies. But that’s not necessarily a sign of lasting love.

But what if true love can be quiet?

Not every love has to start with a loud bang. Some can start quietly. When the nervous system slows down and you just feel safe. Safe to be yourself. Safe to speak up. Or even safe enough to open up in the first place. That’s a different level of love. It’s built on mutual respect, understanding, and a sense of belonging. Suddenly that starts to feel different.

But to be in a position like that, it often requires us to be the counterpart. We grow into the version of who we truly are. Because whenever we want to build a relationship of trust and mutual understanding, we first have to establish that deep relationship with ourselves. How else can we speak our truth if we don’t even know our truth?

And that can be another reason why sometimes love may find us later. Not because we failed or something is wrong with us but because it can help us to focus on the relationship with ourselves first.

That can be a moment when you shift from desperation to excitement again.

That can also shift the longing to aligning

We may no longer long or indulge in what-ifs. We rather choose to spend my time on ourselves.

Longing often makes us stay in wishful thinking. Aligning makes us move anyhow.

We no longer wait until love finds us. We may wish to enjoy our life right now. Then suddenly life has a different meaning because you give it meaning again.

When you start choosing the relationship with yourself, you may nurture that relationship. You may spend more time on your own and become aware of what suits you and what doesn’t. You may become conscious of what it is that you want. Then you become aware that the longing is often the longing for wholeness within yourself, not necessarily about another person. As soon as you notice you feel so rich on your own and build a life that you fall in love with, who knows which doors may open up later? It may become much easier to find a suitable partner later.

They can see the true you, who you truly are. That can be another reason why true love may find us later in life. In our earlier years, we may put our focus elsewhere. We may focus on different things. For example, people who became older report that they value compatibility over spark. You can have an instant spark and great chemistry, but if your values and lifestyles don’t align, it becomes hard to build a life together. It’s like people say: leave the sex and bags out of a relationship; what remains? Is there substance? Are there shared values or even mutual goals?

All that can become a priority for someone who may wish to have a relationship that’s built on depth, not chemistry alone. As soon as we become aware of our values, we may look for different values in another person. So maybe the person who truly suits us wasn’t even on our radar earlier in life.

Sometimes we're stuck in patterns

Sometimes it's not always finding reasons or understanding why love may find us later. Sometimes we may have been stuck in patterns that can hold love back. Imagine someone can’t really speak their truth. It becomes incredibly hard to tell the truth to someone else. The partner will only trigger it more.

The person we’d be happy with may not recognise us. Sometimes we first need to become aware of who we truly are. If we aren’t our true selves, how shall another person even recognise us?

I remember there was a woman stuck in her old job, frustrated at getting up each morning. She was working as a medical assistant but dreaming of working more creatively. In fact, that was her true self. The creative self that wanted to come through. The assistant job she took up because of convenience, not alignment, she later reported.

Imagine a partner would really be drawn to that creative energy, where a person thrives. Isn’t that a different scenario than being in a job you feel frustrated in? In the new creative job, she is a different version of herself than the desperate version in a job she doesn't really like.

And you may ask yourself deep down: isn’t it attractive to meet someone who lives their thing? It doesn’t matter what it is, but it’s this feeling of “wow, someone seems to thrive in what they do.”

Their mood is better. Their attitude may be more positive. And you may feel attracted to what they do or who they are while they do it. In summary, sometimes love may find us later because we may first fall in love with ourselves and build a life we love.

And here's the thing. Not all partners may be able to deal with that. Some may be intimidated by people shining their light and living their truth. Then the question no longer is, am I single, or why hasn't love found me yet? It becomes more of a question "Who do I choose to spend my life with?"

It's no longer about choosing anyone just for the sake of it. It's about choosing consciously. And when the right partner comes along, they can walk beside us. You then know what aligns because you live your truth. You can sooner spot red flags, too.

Each soul may choose their own path

That reminds us that each soul or human may have a different approach. Some grow, heal, and build together.

Some first spend some time alone to later come together. It shows the diversity of the human experience.

In the end, there's no real right or wrong. And if you wonder, “But why is love coming late?” Then maybe spend that time building rather than waiting. Challenge your own patterns that may keep you stuck.

And ultimately never forget, you’re a sovereign soul on your unique journey. Love shouldn't be a status symbol or an achievement, it's an experience. Our time alone can be an experience, too. Then you suddenly you may choose to enjoy each experience as it arises.
