The Impact of Influencer Culture on Our Lives

12 December 2025

When does inspiration stop being inspiration and start disconnecting us from ourselves?

Influencer culture doesn't only shape individual choices. When millions of people begin wanting the same destinations, products, lifestyles and experiences, those individual choices can collectively shape communities, environments and even cultures.

I'm not saying influencers are harmful.

Many of them educate, entertain and genuinely inspire people. But I've observed certain patterns that have emerged through influencer culture that I find worth questioning. To me, influencers often mirror something that already exists within us. They reflect our desires, our insecurities and our subconscious beliefs. That's exactly why they can be so powerful.

And perhaps that's where conscious living comes in. The question isn't whether we should listen to influencers or ignore them completely. It's whether we can remain connected to ourselves while being exposed to so many external influences. Can we be inspired by others without losing touch with our own intuition? Can we make conscious choices instead of simply adopting what is presented to us?

1. You Follow a Trend Thinking It Will Make You Someone (→ external validation / identity)

A blogger posts a luxury cream. An influencer shares their newest designer bag. Suddenly, you want it too.

Not necessarily because you truly need it, but because somewhere inside you, it promises something else: status, belonging or acceptance. Many brands don't sell products. They sell identities. Before buying something because it's trending, it's worth asking a few questions.

Do I actually need this?

Is this product aligned with my values?

Does the company operate responsibly?

Is this genuinely good for me?

Sometimes we become so focused on whether something is fashionable that we forget to ask whether it's actually beneficial.

At the end of the day, influencer marketing is also a business. Influencers are paid to promote products, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that. But it's important to remember that their content often serves both inspiration and advertising.

Your money is more than money. It's your energy. Every purchase supports a business, a product and a way of doing things. Your energy is precious. Choose carefully where you invest it.

2. You Become So Invested in Trends That You Forget Your Own Dreams (→ losing your own desires / intuition)

Perhaps the biggest risk isn't buying the handbag. It's slowly forgetting yourself. You begin following every trend because everyone else seems to be doing it.

But who says that's your style?

Who says that's your dream?

Who are you, deep down?

I think many of us are driven by something very human: the desire to belong. We don't want to feel left out. We don't want to be different. But belonging and authenticity aren't always the same thing.

Sometimes, constantly following the crowd moves us further away from ourselves. I've also noticed this in travel.

An influencer posts about a beautiful hotel in Bali or Costa Rica. Thousands of people suddenly want to visit the exact same place. Of course, tourism can bring opportunities and income to local communities. But when destinations become popular because of social media, they can also face overcrowding, environmental pressure and rapid development that isn't always designed with local people in mind.

It makes me wonder: Am I travelling because a place genuinely calls to me? Or because someone else made it look desirable?

I like to believe that places carry their own energy. Sometimes we're drawn somewhere because something about it resonates deeply with us. If we constantly let trends choose for us, we may never discover where our own intuition would have taken us.

3. You Lose Touch With Yourself (living vicariously through someone else)

Another pattern I've noticed is how easy it becomes to live someone else's life instead of your own.

Some people wake up and immediately check what their favourite influencer is doing.

Where they're travelling. What they're buying. Who they're dating. What they're wearing. Meanwhile, their own dreams quietly wait in the background. I think it's healthy to ask ourselves from time to time:

Am I creating my own life?

Or am I simply watching someone else create theirs?

There's a difference between inspiration and obsession. Inspiration encourages you to become more yourself. Obsession slowly pulls you away from yourself. Creators don't simply follow trends. They question them. They create their own path. You don't need the designer bag, the expensive cream or the luxury holiday to become someone.

You already are someone. The question is whether you're building a life that reflects who you are—or one that reflects someone else's highlight reel.

Social media often presents carefully curated moments. We all have difficult days that rarely make it onto a screen. Behind every polished image is a real human being with struggles, doubts and imperfect moments. That's why comparing our everyday lives to someone else's curated highlights is rarely fair.

Throughout history, people have searched outside themselves for guidance—through religion, philosophy, teachers and communities. Today, it sometimes feels as though many people search for answers through influencers. But perhaps the most important voice we can learn to trust is our own.

The Lesson

There's nothing wrong with being inspired by someone else. The problem begins when inspiration replaces your own intuition.

When someone else's dream or following someone else's journey becomes more important than your own.

Let yourself be inspired. Learn from others. Celebrate their success.

But don't forget to create a life that feels authentic to you. Because the world doesn't need another follower. It needs more people who have the courage to become themselves.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Have you ever caught yourself following a trend that didn't really feel like you?

Or have you experienced the positive side of social media and influencers?
