The benefits of a temporary social media detox

How a social media detox made me become more clear mentally, emotionally and spiritually

Maybe you know the feeling too…. You’re on your way to work, checking social media... waiting for food, checking social media… waiting for a friend, checking social media... Not sure what to do next, checking social media… if you’re bored, checking social media…

I was no different. I was checking social media right after getting up and right before sleeping. I wasn’t always the one producing content but absorbing content. One day, I had an astonishing oberservation. Social media can drain your energy to an extent it can impact your mood, often unconsciously. How? Not everything that’s shared on social media is positive. People would focus on the positive stuff, but it doesn’t mean it’s the truth. Yet, energy only knows the truth. If you’re feeling terrible and put on a smile on and say something nice to be liked, the underlying energy is your bad mood that comes along with it. It’s so subtle, you may not recognise it. It’s like when there’s fresh water and the water tap is calcified, your water may not be so fresh. But it’s not visible at first.

And that was exactly what I could observe or feel with social media. People that I followed drained me, not all, but some random ones that appeared. Sometimes it made me become judgmental or other times I suffered with someone. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to have empathy but there came a point where it drained my energy to an extent it wasn't really bringing me further or contributing to my joy throughout the day. Mentally, I felt less clear.

One night, I tuned into my intuition and my intuition told me to have a social media break for the next three days. It came as a surprise. And as I always follow my intuition I did so. I signed off for 3 days. And boy it wasn’t easy. And yet it was astonishing. Instead in the night before going to bed I wouldn’t check social media, I would spend half an hour dreaming of my future. Focusing on what really matters. Getting engaged with my desires.
In the morning, I didn’t start with social media but I would focus on my day. I would focus on gratitude. During the day, I focused on myself, my emotions, my mood and what made me feel good. I was far less judgmental and drained within 2 days already. And I became clear that following random strangers and following strangers on their parties, anniversaries, dramas and all sorts of things (don’t get me wrong they do sound nice) drained my energy. I was so focused on other people and sometimes I found myself feeling bad. I started to compare myself completely unconsciously. I started to judge. I started to absorb their energies. And guess what? Now I was in the energy of judgment and comparison. When you're in those energies, guess what, no good can result. Worst of all, it's how I continued my day.

When I gave up my social media consumption for 3 days unless I felt guided to share something, I felt so much more alive. So much lighter. So much more centered. I felt no need to engage in random stranger’s dramas and stories. In my opinion, we all crave for attention and love. And sometimes people go on social media to find the attention they cannot find within themselves. And that’s where energy vampirism can appear. I know it sounds harsh but it’s not really as harsh as the word implies. What I mean by energy vampirism is when you don’t feel loveable or cannot accept yourself deep down and hoping for acceptance and approval outside of you. And that’s why we can feel weak.
The path to true power and a joyful life is when you’re centred in your own energy first. When you know yourself first and don’t have to strive for attention or approval by others. Some people even ask strangers what colour of their house or car or dress they should choose. By all means, this has become an interesting world where people would ensure their followers approve. And I ask myself what for? We don’t live in their house. They don’t live in mine. It only has to be appreciated by me.

If we’re constantly concerned what others think of us and ensure we choose what they would choose we are like slaves to external circumstances.
And on the other hand, when you consume content, it can leave you focus on other people’s lives, not your own. Some people become sad or disappointed when a stranger doesn’t respond. How odd is that?
I come to remind you, just like I reminded myself, you’re not here to be liked and appreciated by others or even have a say in other people’s lives. You came here to create and live your own life the way you want in the first place. How many people can truly say they created a life they love and that truly fulfills them? Not many.

And so the social media detox can help you become clear on your own life, habits, emotions and how you wish to spend your days. This life is not forever, do you want to look back one day realising you watched other people live their life on social media while you could have made much more out of yourself? I leave that up to you.

If you felt inspired by this story, give it a try. Sign off for 3 days or whatever feels good to you and focus on yourself and your life and your dreams and I’m sure you’ll be surprised. That’s true self love. Self love doesn’t mean to polish your nails or talk about it. It means taking time to nourish yourself even if no one out there approves or likes it. They don’t have to. That’s the deeper meaning of self-love.

And btw, You know what’s much better than watching people on holiday? Creating a life that can make you feel like you’re on holiday. Or Going on a real holiday yourself. Let’s not mix up the digital world with the real world.

What does that have to do with manifesting? Oh , a lot if you ask me. We don’t create what we wish for, we create what we are an energetic match to. So if you’re constantly in the energy of judgment, worry, or absorbing other crazy energies, that’s what our reality becomes like

Without a doubt social media can encourage and inspire too, this is just a reminder to become aware. Become more Aware of your energy and what you spend your time on. It has an impact on your life in tremendous ways.
